Spring's Constant

We Ain't Done with Hair Yet!

Two weeks ago I wrote a blog piece on hair title "Have We Talked Enough About Hair? NOPE! NO! NEVER!". There I had explained the theory of elasticity as presented in that of my hair. That investigation led me to paint my hair in its natural form, after observing how it moved in a spring-like motion.

I thought about incorporating the equation F=-kx, as a hair clip or as a sciency afro pick but I was not satisfied by the way it looked. In doing so I realized that not displaying the equation into the painting does not diminish the value in how I perform my understanding of physics.

I named it Spring's Constant because I was interested in the way my hair formed different forms of k (the rigidity of my hair.) When I am taking care of my hair I often observe how some curls are looser than others, how some coils are stiffer than most, and how some pieces of hair form no spring-like shape at all. There is very little k when my hair is blown out or straighten and an overabundance of it when washed or twisted with a hair product.

This painting is a symbol of my love for science, art, and the magic of my blackness.

Hair a Love Story: Part II

This blog is part of my journey with physics, art, and everything in between. You can find a new post here every Sunday. Here are some upcoming topics and things that I will be talking about later this month.

September 13th : TBA

September 20th: TBA

I've set up a Patreon account. There you will be able to gain early access to my blog posts, be able to submit input on upcoming projects, and have access to exclusive editorial bonus videos. I am hoping to create content as well as build with creatives/scientists, to change the narrative of what it means to see, hear, and experience science & art collectively. I hope you will join me on this exciting journey! Thank you for supporting my work it is appreciated!
